Welcome Do you wish to interact more with your community? Activity in RACES is a great way to
meet your neighbors. There is also the satisfaction of helping those in need of
assistance. 73 and hope to hear
you on the air.
Our Mission The over-arching mission of New York City RACES is to provide
timely, quality, and proficient auxiliary radio communications to served agencies and organizations--our
"clients"--for a variety of emergency situations and special events. We
are all personally bound to public service with a commitment to our local
communities.
Hierarchy The NYC Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES) is a
component of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) program begun in 1952 to provide emergency
and back-up communications for various local and state government agencies and is comprised of
volunteer amateur radio operators who have registered their equipment for use in supporting local civil
emergencies, by providing communications back-up or replacement to either government or the various relief
agencies that are working together to aid the citizens of New York City. RACES is led by a Citywide Radio Officer who reports to these
agencies. While other RACES
members may serve in various functions, they are generally members-at-large. All public service training events are conducted both as needed
field training for RACES members and as an outreach to various charitable and civic groups. While these events are not “official”
RACES activations, they are the same as off-duty uniformed agency personnel (NYPD, FDNY,
etc) volunteering in their communities.
